This album is already hot in Atlanta.  Personally, I’m a sucker for pianos, organs and boys who know big words. Inertia is a smart album, employing the sounds we used to clean the house on Saturday mornings to. Niko’s flow is at pace with indie-turned-mainstream rappers like Wale and J-Cole. However, the absence of melodic choruses aligns him with the rapper Curren$y, a notably isolationist artist who represents a deeper level of the underground music movement.
Producer Kyle “Pro” Stewart provides Niko with some dope and funky sounds. My favorites are “Ankles” with it’s thrilling soul organ, and “Kevlar Heart”, which had an intro that felt like a Winans’ song. Niko’s weakness is “Funeral Speech”. The track is redundant and his diction and flow are uninspiring.
Overall the album has a clear and classic sound. INERTIA is made for summertime, so I’m geeked to ride out to a beach (or a fucking pool) to this one. Niko is a rapper worth looking out for.
